<Dakal> We'll be under way in a moment.
<Dakal> Please me patient, the session will begin soon.
<Dakal> We can begin :)
<Dakal> Allow me to introduce myself, my name is David Knepper and I'll be your host for this session.
<Dakal> This session is another in a series of unannounced sessions dealing with services common sense, password precautions, and security in general.
<Dakal> We will be having these periodically to help you folks out.
<Dakal> And now, let me introduce my associate, mittens.
<mittens> Hi, my name is Crystal. Im going to be talking about how to pervent users from getting other users channels and nicks passwords.
<Dakal> She will be giving a good part of this presentation.
<Dakal> And I'm sure the rest of us will chime in when appropriate :)
<Strega> *chime* <g>
<Dakal> Thank you for your great behavior so far.
<mittens> There are alot of other networks out for IRC, alot of users like to use auto perform /msg nickserv identify password on connect.
<Dakal> Please don't message the ops during presentation, we don't have the time to respond in any way.
<mittens> The other networks may not have services like we do. So its very easy for other users to impersonate services on other networks
<mittens> And if you have auto connect to identify your password, the person who has the nick nickserv or chanserv will end up with your nick password.
<mittens> To protect yourself from this happening there are may different ways. But the best way is not to use /msg nickserv identify password, But to use /nickserv identify password
<mittens> The reason for /nickserv that DALnet has, is so if you do have it set up in your on connect to identify your password and you go to another network the you will recieve an error msg UNKNOWN nickserv
<mittens> You should never use on connect to identify your nick, also dalnet has the same setup for chanserv /chanserv
<mittens> When you use this methods /chanserv /nickserv the password will never show on your screen, this will help you if you also, if you give out logs to other people they will NOT get the password cause it wont show on the screen.
<mittens> There are alot of users who like to get password just to cause trouble. Protect yourself.
<mittens> If you give out a password by going to another network, and someone is posing as services, DALnet is not responsible for giving your nick or channel back to you. That is a DALnet policy. Be more careful in what you do with your passwords. Other wise you can end up without your nick.
<mittens> Please dont msg the ops until we tell you to.
<mittens> The best solution to help you is, wait til you are sure you are on a DALnet server then identify your nick. You can make popups or aliases for each.
<mittens> Or if you use IRCII or other clients you can also use /quote chanserv /quote nickserv.
<mittens> This is for your protection. NEVER give out your password to anyone. IF you give your password out to someone for nick or channel, and they take that channel or nick you will NOT get them back. We do not give back channels or nicks when someone goes and gives the password to other people and they deside to take it. Its to hard to find out what really happened. Protect your password Dont give it out to anyone.
<mittens> Script.ini has be pregessing as of late. If you think you have such a script, you should goto www.mirc.org and get mIRC 5.31 this will take care of your problem.
<Dakal> Thank you for that presentation mittens.
<Dakal> While we're all here, we might as well go over a few routine items relevent to these tutorials.
<mittens> This script will let other people see what you are typing and may give your passwords to them as well. Just please be care of your passwords.
<Dakal> One item would include Denial of Service attacks or 'nukes'. You can find information about these attacks and ways to protect yourself on the websites in the topic.
<Dakal> There are also loggers and firewalls available from these links.
<Supernaut-> Please folks, knock off the nick changes.
<Dakal> A quick review of the help channel system now:
<Dakal> #OperHelp - Official IRC Operator / Admin channel. Password help and things which require an IRC Operator can be addressed here.
<Dakal> #DALnethelp - Official general services/irc help channel.
<Dakal> #OperHelp and #DALnethelp are DALnet run.
<Dakal> #HelpDesk - DALnet's recommended, but privately run scripting/bot help channel.
<Supernaut-> excuse me dave......
<Supernaut-> Folks: we know that banning *!*@* will stop the nick changes, but then legit opers cannot join. It would be simpler for you to stop doing the nick changes, and act like mature users of the internet, thank you.
<Dakal> #Help_Channel - DALnet's recommended general help channel for help on anything from computer hardware to installing windows software.
<Dakal> And that concludes are brief session.
<Dakal> We thank you for your attention and generally good behavior.
<Dakal> Have a pleasant evening.
<Program> Moo
<Dakal> Ops are no longer bound to stay in the channel and can part on their own accord.
<Supernaut-> damn skippy I can =)
<kingwill> please turn off all auto-msges on join.
<mittens> okay who needs help?
<Android3> You will want to remove +m I think
<mittens> msg me and ill answer some questions.
<kingwill> no :) if you need help, mssage one of the ops.
<Android3> :)
<kingwill> otherwise all hell breaks loose ;)
<kingwill> If you have specific questions on the IRC client mIRC.. type /join #mIRC where they are glad to help you. If you have questions on DALnet services, /join #DALnethelp. For general-computer and irc help, /join #irchelp, or #help_channel or #helpdesk.

<kingwill> If you need help in french.. /join #DALnetaide. thanks tapis :)
<kingwill> <`Daniel`> /quote nickserv and /quote chanserv only work for ircII ?
<kingwill> <kingwill> alias CHANSERV /quote CHANSERV :$0-
<kingwill> <kingwill> alias NICKSERV /quote CHANSERV :$0-
<kingwill> thats for ircII, then type //save. (to write to .ircrc)
<kingwill> also #DALnetayuda if you need help in spanish, although there are alot of opers who speak spanish.
<kingwill> anyone else need help? just msg me.
<Iceburn> To get a list of Operators who speak extra languages try -> /finger linguists@dal.net
<kingwill> you can also msg one of the voice(es). I just made them available for help. <G>
<kingwill> <Raditz> Are there any plans of going back to killing users that are not using their nicks instead of what nickserv is doing now (changing their nicks to "Guests") ? | nope. Guest*** is going to be around for a while, so that the users aren't disconnected.
<kingwill> its more friendly.
<kingwill> <Violent^J> So what you are saying is that owners of a nick can't turn on the kill command any more?
<kingwill> <kingwill> yes, they can. But instead of killing the users.. it will just change their nick.
<kingwill> <Foobar> according to an oper i know, nick change was also implemented so that he doesn't get like 100 messages a day from users thinking they're k-lined, that true? ;_ | yeah, possibly *shrug* it could be, though I don't think its the main reason.
<Iceburn> As always help concerning Nickname/Channel Passwords can be found in #OperHelp
